Ideas
Rabbia's Ideas ..
Waking up- many people have a hard getting/waking up since many people just click the button of their phone and go to sleep (http://www.fastcompany.com/3040000/how-i-finally-trained-myself-to-wake-up-early)
My Ideas..
Umbrella holder- carrying an umbrella can be a drag especially if it's raining and you're holding a lot of things in your hand. Umbrella's are also a problem when you're trying to get in a vehicle but it's hard to close the umbrella.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/innovations/wp/2014/10/24/why-the-air-umbrella-is-a-bad-idea/
Coin grabber- picking up coins one by one when it's on some kind of counter-top is tedious especially if you're a girl that got her nails done and has fake long nails. One example would be when the cashier tries to hand you you're change but you awkwardly fumble around trying to hold it as well as the dollar bills. http://www.goldwhy.com/why-collect-spare-change-from-the-ground.html

- Clothes Folder- Folding clothes in such a pain for everyone especially teenagers. It's especially annoying when you have to unfold the shirt to see what it looks like and fold it back up again and do the same thing to another shirt.

- Taking notes- Many people like to take notes and highlight specific things when ready but they don't want to ruin the book whether it's their own, the schools, a friends, etc..

Problem Statement
People around Snow Hill High School and family members have trouble of not being able to write in books because they do not want to ruin them. From surveys, 58 % of people hate when you can't take notes, or write in a book, and 53% of people don't want books to be ruined by writing in them. This problem has been around since the beginning of books and statistically effects people around Snow Hill and also around our school.
Justification
http://www.goodreads.com/blog/show/548-15-of-your-biggest-book-pet-peeves * Many people were discussing their pet peeves and #8 by Anna Moloney specifically called out how highlighting in books is a big problem.
https://www.reddit.com/r/books/comments/2prdvf/how_do_you_take_notes_while_reading/ * Many people commented on how they take notes whether it's while reading for pleasure or reading for class. Most of them use either post-it notes or highlighting and others talk about how they "don't want to ruin their clean books"
http://www.skillsyouneed.com/write/notes-reading.html * This site informs us of the importance of note-taking and said that the most effective forms is highlighting, emphasizing, and writing side notes even though a lot of people don't want to ruin a clean book especially if it's not theirs.

Summary
This part of the project was very tedious and requires a lot of patience. Many of the problems that we came up with already had solutions to them such as waking up, getting toothpaste out of the toothpaste holder, cookies falling in milk, etc... After we found out that pretty much all our ideas were already discovered, we started afresh with new problems, a new decision matrix, and a new problems statement. After going through MANY problems, we decided on the problem of readers not being able to write in their book. It was easy coming up with the decision matrix as well as the problem statement. We used our survey statistics to come up with parts of the problem statement. We had surveyed 212 people also. Our 3 reliable resources were easy to find as well since this was a common problem that all readers/students had. For our survey, we went to mainly Snow Hill high School students and a lot of them had the problem of not being able to write in a book. So furthermore, after a lot of decision making on both Rabbia and I's part, we decided this as our final problem since there aren't many patents that solve this problem.
Part B.
Previous Patents & Existing Patents
Potential Market
Potential customers for this product would be college students or upperclassmen high school students. Many college students use note-taking since it's a great way to study rather than cramming all the information in your head the night before a test. Note-taking saves you a lot of time so that you don't have to reread everything word for word and instead have notes on the side to reveal the main points. Note-taking also keeps you organized and up-to-date. This product could be sold in bookstores on campus so that it could be easy access to college students. It's proven that college students miss about 40% of the important information told through a lecture and 1st year students recording only about 11% of the information. (http://www.crlt.umich.edu/sites/default/files/resource_files/CRLT_no16.pdf). This problem can be solved by the student taking notes in the textbook through our product without damaging it and going over the notes at home while having the textbook methods as well. As the teacher is lecturing the students, the student could take additional notes that the teacher is going over and add that to the textbook information to better understand the topic so that the college kids can be more prepared and organized as well as understand the concept better. On the website http://jerz.setonhill.edu/writing/academic1/taking-notes-5-college-success-tips/, all 5 of the college tips had to do with note-taking whethter it's to look over your notes, highlight important facts or going to class prepared. "It’s a simple fact of academic survival – the best students take the best notes! Notes not only aid comprehension, but they also make learning active and, most importantly, make study time more efficient, especially during end-of- the semester review sessions for final exams. (Colgate University)." This shows that note-taking is an important factor, especially in college since almost 100% of college students take notes and base their learning off of them and the better organized and understanding your view of the concept is, the better student you'll be. The main reason we chose college students for this invention is because note-taking is not only used in books but also for lectures which are very common in college. "There's strong evidence that taking notes during a lecture leads to higher achievements... Studies show that if you take notes, you have a 50% chance of recalling the information during test time vs a 15 % chance of recalling the info if you didn't take notes" (cite on page 178, https://books.google.com/books?id=FEfAAgAAQBAJ&pg=PA178&lpg=PA178&dq=what+percent+of+college+class+requires+you+to+take+notes&source=bl&ots=1eguZVkcEN&sig=BCmtgNoJb07o97QiPoPquA9DXoY&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0CFUQ6AEwCGoVChMI4KnAmvb0yAIVyqceCh0ArAe4#v=onepage&q=what%20percent%20of%20college%20class%20requires%20you%20to%20take%20notes&f=false). This product will be the ticket to become a better student.

Summary
In Part B, we analyzed prior solution attempts and found a lot of information. The patents that I chose were very interesting. I searched a Plannerism which is a calendar, or a small book with lamination that you can write on with an erasable pen or expo marker. The next Patent that I found was a write and erase electronic book that annotates and highlights words in the reading that you would like. The last Patent is Transparent sheets, that you place on your book, they are very lightweight and are used with a dry erase or highlighter also. Most of the Patents that I chose had many great comments, some also had negative comments about how they don't work correctly or being as though the book is electronic, the system would run slow, or the transparent paper would slip off the book. Rabbia also found Patents which consists of finding three patents which were all unique in their own way. The first one was a bookmark that had post-it notes disposed within it and a paperclip so that you can't lose your page. The second one was a notes transmitter where you write notes with a certain pen that apple made and it's send signals over to an electronic device so that you can have back-up notes. The 3rd patent she found was an electronic note-taking system installed into a software and saves all your notes onto it. All three of these patents gave us a unique approach to our problem whether it was the ability to transmit onto an electronic device or the thought of keeping the product from falling out of the book. The potential market that we found are more for readers or students who are still in school or go to college, and also adults that take notes frequently.
Part C
Designers- Brynae And Rabbia
Who is the target consumer?
The target costumer for the product that we will be developing is students of a younger and also middle aged people who take notes in a sophisticated manner for multiple purposes like taking notes , annotating readings and also keeping track of where you are reading or if you need to pause at a certain point. Overall this product is to help keep the object clean and to look professional
What does the customer want/need?
The costumer that would be buying this product needs a clean and understandable learning and note taking/annotating strategy to succeed in school and college, they want to make it easier for readers and students to read and understand different meanings and definitions.
What must the product be able to do?
This product must be able to be erasable and be written in and on without the pages messing up. This product must make it easier for students reading and taking notes also. The product does not have to be powered by anything but yourself. It does not have to be on a certain surface but most likely on a desk/ flat surface area or also on your lap.
What is the anticipated cost to the consumer for this product?
The cost to the costumer should be around 20 dollars . We came up with this price because this is the cost of all of our materials that we would use and be selling for the same A student would be able to buy this product it is very cheap and would be used for a good cause, also making thing organized and neater . As for an adult , they would be able to pay more because of the income but as s student you are on the edge of funds. People would buy this product, because it is very low I n price but very useful in the future and for reading.
What size should the product be, or what restrictions to size exist? What are the weight restrictions on the product?
This project should be not even heavier than 1 pound it should be very lightweight because of the transparency and foldable paper / book that we will be making/ improving. The weight restrictions would not vary, just depending on the book itself. Costumers would be able to carry it anywhere because of its weight and placement .
Are there preferences in the appearance features of the product (color, surface treatment, shape, material)? If so, describe them.
This project will be square with sharp edges and it will not have a specific color. The surface treatment is smooth so costumers will be able to write and take notes normally, and also the product will be enclosed in the middle like a normal book would be. The product will have a hole to safely slide the book page in and transparency film on the other sides to tear off and place into your note taking book.
Is there a specific material or materials that must be used? If yes, describe it.
Four our project we will either use PVC sheets, which is a thin sheet that comes in different colors, or we will use transparency sheets, which usually go on an overhead. It is more thinner than the PVC sheet. We will also use the clasp envelope seals to keep that product in place. We are also using a tin backing for the product so it would be strong and structured.
Identify potential safety and legal issues that may arise from the use of this product.
Be careful with use in order to protect yourself from paper-cuts and can be a possible choking hazard for small children. Make sure to keep material out of heat and keep at room temperature to avoid damage to books.
Ergonomics.
The person would be able to write on the object while the product will be placed on a book. The goal is for the product to be safe, easy to use, and comfortable for the user.
Operating environment
The temperature that the product should be in is room temperature. It should withstand many variations of temperatures such as coolness and heat. If the texture is smooth, heat will probably damage the product and make it melt on the book so heat is NOT a good idea.
Global Environment
There aren't really any toxic substances included unless you want to count the contents in a marker as one of them. The plan for disposal is to recycle it since the material that we want to incorporate in this product can be reused over and over again.
Service Life
The service life required has no limit. You can use this product over and over again. The only thing that needs "repair" is the fact of erasing the notes written on the product in order to reuse the product in another book.
Product Life
The estimated product life is probably 2 years since many of the patents we researched were in the process of being created.
Durability and maintenance
The only part of the product the requires maintenance is the part that you wrote on. You'll have to erase what's on the product in order to write more notes on it. The only times that the product requires maintenance is when you wish to get rid of the notes on the product to write more notes or different notes in. Another instance where you would want to maintain the product is if you want to use the product in a different book. The anticipated tools required are water and perhaps a cloth/sponge to wipe the words off.

My sketches
Sketch A: This is a transparent paper that is only around the outside which is the boarder. This would be made with PVC paper and it would slightly stick to the book being able to take it off easily.
|
Sketch B: This is a transparent sticky note. This note will come I many different colors just like a sticky note would be. It would serve as a sticky note to take notes with and also an annotating reference.
|
![Picture](/uploads/2/4/1/7/24179485/927160173.png?283)
Sketch C: This is a transparent paper sheet that sticks to the book page so you could take notes anywhere you would like on the page.
Rabbia's Sketches
Sketch D
This is a black light pen. When you take notes with the pen you will be able to write it anywhere. It will be slightly clear, to see the notes you will have to turn the backlight on the pen on so you would be able to review your notes. |
Sketch E
This is also a pen, we will use a chemical called phenolphthalein to put in the pen, but before we will take the pen apart and put the liquid inside the pen. After a while the ink will disappear, but all you will have to do is to spray a substance on the book layer paper and it will reappear. |
Sketch F: The PVC sheet would be attached to the thin tin sheet on 3 sides. The side that is touching the book spine will remain open so that you can insert a book page in between the tin sheet and the PVC sheet. You’d write your notes overtop the PVC sheet and you can remove/replace the sheet for new notes. Attach a sticky adhesive that has a protective cover on the back top and bottom of each sheet so when you want to place the notes in your book, just take the cover paper off the adhesive and stick onto page. *****

Final Design!
Decision Matrix
Winning Design Description!
The design that we picked consists of transparent paper, and Light Wedge. The transparent paper would be connected to the lightwedge by clasps. On the whole page you will be able to write notes and annotate without destroying the book. After your notes are done and you want to keep them, all you would have to do is replace the sheet, and there will be more sheets to use for the next page behind it. There will be an opening on the light wedge so you can replace the transparent sheets also. When you are finished with your notes you will just take the whole sheet off, and stick it on a book or note composition book if you would ever want to look back at the notes for future reference.
Part E
Science And Engineering Concepts
What I need to know in order to build The Noterizer is the size of an average text book so we will be able to know what size to build the prototype. We also need to know how much PVC paper we will need to put on our prototype. We need to know the sides of the pages, so that the product will be able to fit in the pages smoothly without crinkling or damaging the page of the book.
Prototype Description
This prototype is constructed with plexiglass, a hard surface for our prototype,Transparent paper, to write notes on a book in, a Light Wedge LED Light, which is a book lighting device and adhesive sticky substance for sticking notes on other books. The main part of this product is the three ring hole punch, which shapes our product. It will be good for college students who study and read at night, students , and people that own businesses. What we are going to do is make readers and people who study, be able to write and annotate what they need to while they are taking notes.
List of Experts
Letter to Adviser: Our adviser is Mr. Gooding so our letter is referring to him.
Dear Mr. Gooding,
We finally came up with our final product, thanks to you. Our main goal for this capstone project is to help college students write in books without damaging the textbook. We did some research and some surveys of our own and concluded that this problem statistically effects 58% of the students that go to school at Snow Hill High School so imagine how many college students have trouble with this since college is all about writing, note-taking, and studying! Our designs consists mainly of PVC paper and thin tin sheets and because they're both cheap and light, this is a great advantage to us. Our idea for the final product is that the PVC paper would be cut into rectangular shapes and it will be connected to the rectangular tin by envelope clasps to keep the paper in place. On the left side it will be an easy opening to slide your book page into. On the whole page you will be able to write notes and annotate without destroying the book. After your notes are done and you want to keep them, all you would have to do is take the sheet off and attach it to your book page by taking the paper layer off of the adhesive and sticking it into your book. You can replace that PVC sheet with another one to lay on top of the tin sheet so that you can write more notes. This product can be very useful to both the user and maker (Brynae and I) since the user can take more effective notes which calls for better studying and better grades. This helps me and Rabbia because you would have to constantly replace the PVC sheets so that more money for both of us. Thanks so much for your brilliant ideas and you'll be hearing from us soon!

Software, Technology, Equipment
.For our invention, there's no software or technology required. The only thing we need is equipment such as a thin tin sheet, PVC paper, 3 envelope clasps, and a sticky adhesive with a covering on top of it. After we have all our materials, we'll create our prototype.
Part F
Product Viability
Loads- The only loads that are required in our product is the PVC paper on top of the tin sheet which will be able to withstand the weight since it's so light.
- Materials- The materials that we chose could withstand time since we're using a light wedge, transparent paper , envelope clasps, and adhesive. The only thing that might wear out over time is the adhesive if you leave the covering off of it and stick it to many different things. The weight of the products is what we were hoping for it to be (very low) since the materials are either small or thin. The tin sheet that we're using is capable of providing sufficient strength, stiffness, and abrasion resistance. The tin is capable of withstanding the PVC paper because of its stiffness and the PVC paper is light and flexible. All the materials can withstand any wear down (TIN). The materials are also capable of repetitive loading since the tin isn't going to be used as much as the PVC paper is. The tin is reusable so you only have to buy it once but the PVC paper comes in many different packages for you to buy. All the materials can withstand varying temperatures (TIN) How will the material react to sunlight, temperature variations, chemicals to which it will be exposed?
- Mechanical Engineering- Our design does not require any input of heat or mechanical power. There are no moving parts other than the replacement of the paper by the user. Everything in our product corresponds and interacts well with one another since they're based on one another. The paper is laid on top of the tin sheet, the envelope clasps keep the paper in place and the adhesive keeps the paper in place in the book with a covering that can be taken off whenever you need the adhesive to make the paper stick.
- Energy- The only energy required for our final product is the energy that the user puts into writing their notes on our product, other than that, there is no other energy required.
- Chemical/Bio Engineering- The only raw material that we're using is tin that will be turned into a thin rectangular sheet.
- Electrical engineering- There is no electricity, electronics, control systems, telecommunications, or computers involved in our product.
- Laws, Codes and regulations- I feel as though we have met our ethical responsibility for technical expertise related to the design of our product.
Consequences of product development- There are no known consequences of this product.
Ethical Justification- This invention helps many people especially college students (our target consumer) since they take a lot of notes and study more than any other people. This will enable them to study better because it is a known fact that taking good notes lead to better studying which leads to better grades. This invention will enable the user to write in their textbook and annotate in it without any damage to the book.
Product lifecycle and Flowchart
Conclusion Questions ???
If you were asked to change an aspect of the product to improve its sustainability, how would you improve the product or change a step in its life cycle? Describe your recommended change(s) and explain how your recommendation(s) would improve the product’s sustainability.
What I would change to improve the products sustainability is to change the chemicals in the PVC paper and also the pen. It would improve this products sustainability because it would make the product have color instead of being neutral, or also use the chemical Phenethylamine which will also be safe for the product and people would buy it more because of the colors and disappearance of words that it would provide.
Why would this sort of an assessment be important if you were considering creating a competing product?
When your product is competing you want it to be very persuasive and useful in life so as many people as possible can buy the product. Although the price may be higher, if its useful then people will buy it, and if it works then they will keep buying the product and it will be very useful. Creating a competing product means that your constraints have to be in order and your product has to be neat, also it has to be in a fairly good cost.

Summary
In Part F We filled out many sheets dealing with product viability which is the pros and cons of our product and what the design, manufacture, packaging, distribution, and use of any new product will result in consequences, both positive and negative ways. We also completed a viability circle dealing with the natural environment and how things function and process throughout this cycle. We filled out a lifecycle flow chart which dealt with the raw materials and how we will recycle our product, or how we will dispose of it. Rabbia answered questions in this part about different engineering methods used in the process of our design. We had some trouble with this part because some of the questions asked we aren't including some of the materials asked. Finally we completed our conclusion questions.

Prototype testing plan
What we are going to test for our product is what is best to write on our Notorizer. Since transparency paper is very thin and it is very erasable when it rubs against things easily. What we are trying to do is use a substance that will stay on the transparency forever to store notes with for future reference. The two tests that we are going to try for this type of paper is a Greece pencil, which is a pencil made of grease colored with a pigment, used especially for marking glossy surfaces. And we are also going to try permanent marker.

Summary
The testing of the prototype was not very hard at all it just took time to figure out which utensil would last longer and would get costumers to buy the product. The pencil will stay on as long as a regular permanent marker will stay on a regular piece of paper. Our advisor, Mr. Gooding figured it was a good idea also to use this utensil because it is very unique and no one ever uses it, we would be bringing back the pencil.
Dear Mr. Gooding,
Thank you for helping me and my teammate on this project. You and your brain impacted this project in many ways. You gave us a lot of ideas to try out and even if it didn't work you still had more ideas coming out. Although our beginning project wasn't working out very well, we found a way to improve our product and make it better so "costumers would actually buy it.
We would to thank Mrs. Zienty for all her support throughout all these years and Mr. Gooding for guiding us toward our final product by giving us different perspectives as to how we should approach our product. We’d also like to thank Mrs. Harlan for guiding us toward our final product and presentation. We wouldn’t be able to come this far without any of them.

Rabbias Reflection
Looking back, this project was actually pretty helpful and we learned a lot of things as well as applied a lot of things that we learned (which was the whole point of this project). In the beginning, it was pretty difficult trying to come up with a problem that didn't already have a solution to it. When we finally came up with the whole not taking able to take notes in a book, we came up with many ways to approach this. Our project was constantly changing because we kept coming up with different ways to approach our project. We finally came up with the idea that involved the Lightwedge and the Plexiglas. The only thing that I would change if I could go back is to order our materials in early so that you're not just wasting your time. The building process was the best part and we learned how to cut glass thanks to Mr. Reister by means of scoring. One of the problems we faced was a wire popping out of place. We freaked out at first but then we remembered soldering in 11th grade thanks to Mrs. Zienty and just soldered the piece back on and the LED's started working again! After that, the tested went smoothly since it did what we wanted it to do the first time. Our dress-up pre-presentation went terribly because we were missing some things from our power point and we weren't as prepared as we should've been and we ended up getting a C. After that, we fixed up our power point and brochure and we presetned again in front of the actual judges. It went smoother than we expected it to go and we ended up getting an A!
The presentation went very well. We both were a little nervous but at the end we did a great job. We both spoke clearly and finished out on a good not with a 91% on our final capstone project. What I think we could have done better was to practice a little more and we could work a little faster so everything would be done before hand.

Brynae's Reflection
This project was very fun and taught me many things to deal with the design process. It took a lot of time but it was worth it. This project showed me what the building process is all about and also it taught be how to present more dealing with a fair amount of people watching you. Some things that I would recommend is making sure the weebly is done everyday because dealing with building your prototype and doing your engineering notebook is a lot but you will also be behind in your website. This project should go on in the future because it gives off a lot of skills in students and what different ideas can be made in the future.
